Celebration of Sport

A big thank you to everyone who participated in, helped with or organised our wonderful Celebration of Sport 2024. This has truly been a mammoth undertaking for all concerned with the planning and delivery of this amazing event. I particularly would like to thank our very generous sponsors who have ensured that this event has been fully funded. Also, a big thank you to all of the very kind individuals who have given up their time and energy helping to promote and support this event in person or via a video clip.  Children and students from all schools across the Trust either participated in an event or helped with this celebration of sport. A fact we should all be rightly proud of.

Sport promotes the integral development of the human person and social friendship… (It is) not only as a source of physical well-being, but of a courageous, positive and optimistic life… Sport becomes a formative experience that helps new generations to cultivate the values of life: love for loyalty and justice, the taste for beauty and goodness, the search for freedom and solidarity.
Always live sport with loyalty and a healthy competitive spirit. This will help you to face the challenges of life with courage and honesty, with joy and serene confidence in the future.

~ Pope Francis in 2019

The community

The BWCET Celebration of Sport is truly a celebration of our Trust community, an opportunity for pupils to develop the virtues we place at the heart of the Trust.

Brendan Foster

Brendan Foster was born in Hebburn, South Tyneside and is a British former long-distance runner, athletics commentator, and road race organiser. Brendan founded the Great North Run, one of the sport’s most high-profile half-marathon races. As an athlete, he won the bronze medal in the 10,000 metres at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada and is a former European and Commonwealth champion.

Sport teaches you to roll with the punches. You’ve got to enjoy the ups and suffer the downs… there wasn’t a session that made me a world record-holder. The only session that made me anything was the one I did today and the one I’m doing tomorrow

Jessica Eddie

Jessica Eddie was born in Durham and was a student at St Leonard’s Catholic School. She is a former British rower and is one of the sport’s most experienced female competitors. Jess is a former European and World champion, and in 2016 she was part of the squad that won a silver medal in the Olympics at Rio de Janeiro.

Sport is amazing, the most amazing thing I’ve ever done, and bigger and better than anyone tells you. The hard work is so rewarding
